چکیده

Mammalian prolactin stimulates growth and inhibits metamorphosis of larvae of several species of amphibians. Mammalian somatotropin has little or no effect upon larval growth or metamorphosis unless used in high concentrations. The evidence behind these statements and some of the implications are critically evaluated. Growth of postmetamorphic amphibians is stimulated by somatotropin but not by prolactin. The possible biological significance of this apparent transition from prolactin to somatotropin regulation of growth in the preand postmetamorphic stages of development is discussed in terms of possible mechanisms involved in the transition, and in terms of the adaptive significance of the change.

Animal Growth Promotants

HISTORICAL DEVELOPMENT In the early 1930s, it was reported that injections of crude pituitary extracts increased growth rates in growing animals and milk production in lactating animals. Subsequent studies led to purification from pituitary extracts of two peptide hormones—prolactin and “growth hormone” or somatotropin—which are important to growth and lactation. Prolactin has many functions ra...

Prolactin is not a juvenile hormone in Xenopus laevis metamorphosis.

Prolactin (PRL) is widely considered to be the juvenile hormone of anuran tadpoles and to counteract the effects of thyroid hormone (TH), the hormone that controls amphibian metamorphosis. This putative function was concluded mainly from experiments in which mammalian PRL was injected into tadpoles or added to cultured tadpole tissues. In this study, we show that overexpression of ovine or Xeno...

Small changes in whole-body corticosterone content affect larval Rana pipiens fitness components.

In amphibians, large changes in tissue corticosterone content (caused by treatment with large doses of hormone) alter tadpole growth and development, but the effects of smaller changes on growth, development, behavior, and morphology are unknown. In the current study, we exposed pre-metamorphic Rana pipiens tadpoles to moderate doses (62 and 125 nM) of exogenous corticosterone by adding it to t...

Effects of developmental and growth history on metamorphosis in the gray treefrog, Hyla versicolor (Amphibia, Anura).

In ecological models, the timing of amphibian metamorphosis is dependent upon rate of larval growth, e.g., tadpoles that experience a decrease in growth rate can initiate metamorphosis early. Recent authors have suggested that this plasticity may be lost at some point during the larval period. We tested this hypothesis by exposing groups of tadpoles of the gray treefrog, Hyla versicolor, to dif...

The effects of short-term growth hormone (somatotropin) bath on some growth and immunity indices in the early stages of growth in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss)

This study was conducted to determine the effect of growth hormone on some growth and immunity parameters at three stages of rainbow trout eyed egg, alvin and fry. The experiment was carried out in 4 treatments with concentrations of 0, 0.1, 0.5 and 1 mg/l of somatotropin hormone. For permeability, different experimental groups were treated with sodium hypochlorite (0.005 %) for 15 seconds befo...
